The Rules We Apply to Our Content

Four frameworks govern what we publish, and this is what each means in practice here.

ASA CAP Code gambling rules, Section 16. Under Section 16, marketers must not exploit the young or the vulnerable, must not imply that gambling can solve financial or personal problems, and must not present it as indispensable, as a rite of passage or as linked to sexual success. We apply all of that to review copy, headings and calls to action, not just to banners.

The strong-appeal rule, 16.3.12. Since October 2022 the test is stricter: a gambling marketing communication must not be likely to be of strong appeal to children or young persons, especially by reflecting or being associated with youth culture, and must not feature a person whose example under-18s are likely to follow. Elite footballers and comparable sportspeople are high risk under this rule, and CAP guidance treats around 100,000 under-18 followers across platforms as indicative of strong appeal. We assess anyone we feature against that standard before publication.

UKGC licence conditions passed down to affiliates. Licensees are responsible under their licence conditions for marketing carried out on their behalf, so the standards land on us through every commercial relationship: socially responsible advertising, no misleading bonus claims and 18+ messaging wherever an offer appears. Where an operator’s compliance team asks for a change to meet its own licence obligations, we make it.

Consumer law and data protection. Significant conditions of a promotion are stated with the offer rather than hidden behind a link, and we do not use a footnote to carry a condition that changes what the offer is worth. Personal data is handled under UK GDPR, as set out in our Privacy Policy, and the site rules are in our Terms and Conditions.

How Bonuses and Promotions Are Presented

Every offer on this site carries its significant conditions next to the offer itself, in the same table row or the same paragraph. The checklist is fixed:

  • Minimum deposit and any qualifying stake;
  • Wagering requirement, or an explicit “none” where there is none;
  • Minimum odds on the qualifying bet;
  • Expiry period for the free bet or bonus;
  • Maximum win or maximum withdrawal where the operator caps it;
  • Whether the stake is returned with the winnings;
  • Payment methods excluded from the offer;
  • 18+ and T&Cs apply.

Bonus terms disclosure also means keeping figures current. Every offer is dated and re-verified monthly against the operator’s own terms under our Fact-Checking Policy, and any change is logged under our Corrections & Updates Policy.

Some wording is banned outright, because it misdescribes what a promotion is:

  • “Free money”, “risk-free bet”, “guaranteed win” or “can’t lose”;
  • “Get rich”, “second income”, “make money betting” or anything framing a bet as investment;
  • “Recover your losses”, “win it back” or any suggestion that betting solves a shortfall;
  • “Instant withdrawal” where the operator publishes a processing window rather than instant payment.

“Free bet” is used only where the operator’s own terms use the term, and it is never used for a deposit-match bonus carrying wagering.

Age Restriction and Safer-Gambling Messaging

Betting is 18+ in Great Britain, and that notice appears in our footer and beside every offer. We publish nothing aimed at under-18s, place no content on platforms intended for children or teenagers, and do not use imagery, music styles or personalities chosen for appeal to a youth audience. Content likely to have strong appeal to under-18s under rule 16.3.12 is not published.

Our footer carries the safer-gambling marks and links that a UK reader should be able to find without hunting: 18+, BeGambleAware, GamStop, GamCare and Take Time To Think. They are links rather than decoration, and the full set of tools and warning signs is on our Responsible Gambling page.

On GamStop our position is a single sentence and it is not negotiable. Every operator on this site that does not take part in GamStop is labelled as such, and we do not encourage, assist or suggest that anyone who has self-excluded should use a non-GamStop operator to bet around their own exclusion. We do not describe an absent GamStop connection as a feature, a benefit or a way to keep playing, and we do not target self-excluded readers with any content or offer.

Offshore Operators: How We Label Them

Our main ranking of the best betting sites in the UK contains Gambling Commission licensees only. Offshore operators appear on separate pages, and this is the practice that governs them.

Each one carries a label in the same fixed form wherever it appears, in a list or in a review: Offshore — licensed in Curaçao — not UKGC-licensed, not on GamStop, with the regulator name swapped for whichever actually applies.

Alongside the label, every offshore operator carries the same standard risk note:

This operator holds no Gambling Commission licence. It does not take part in GamStop, there is no free UK dispute route through an approved ADR provider, and its regulator does not adjudicate individual disputes. Payments can meet more friction and identity checks are often raised at the withdrawal stage rather than at sign-up. The legal position for a bettor in Great Britain is not settled, we describe what is known rather than closing the gap with a confident sentence, and nothing here is legal advice.

Two rules follow. Offshore operators never appear in a list titled “UK licensed”, “legal in the UK”, “UKGC-approved” or anything implying it, and are never presented as equivalent to a licensee. Nor do we describe one as safe for UK players, because that is a judgement its regulator has not given us grounds to make.

Affiliate Relationships and Disclosure

We earn commission when a reader opens an account through one of our outbound links, which run through an identifiable `/go/` redirect. A disclosure line appears above every ranking and comparison table, and the full model, including what commission cannot buy, is set out in How We Make Money.
